Frequently asked questions

Questions and Answers

Below you will find answers to many common questions about Binson Gives.

What is Binson Gives?

Binson Gives is a 36 hour challenge bringing together the whole College community. Students, Fellows, staff and friends from across the world will unite and connect, share College memories of why we all love Robinson, whilst raising money for the Annual Fund and other priority projects.

What makes a Giving Day like Binson Gives different from any other day?

Unlike gifts made in the rest of the year, donations made during ‘Binson Gives’ have the potential to generate even further impact by unlocking matched funding and challenge funding. If you already know you will be busy on May 10th and 11th you can give in advance to ensure your gift still has maximum impact.

What are we fundraising for?

Robinson currently has two funding priorities, the Annual Fund and Student Wellbeing. The Robinson College Annual Fund exists to help all aspects of College life.  It provides flexibility to deal with issues of urgent need that arise in the course of the year, such as:

  • Securing Academic Excellence - it is the individual colleges that bear most of the costs of the supervision system, although the majority of Government funding and fees are received by the central University.
  • Student Support - the best students are accepted on their merit alone, regardless of their financial situation and each year there are students whose financial circumstances change through no fault of their own, or who find themselves in need of financial assistance. The College is contributing an ever greater proportion of this support.
  • Building development and maintenance – maintaining the living and teaching spaces and facilities, construction of new College buildings and managing the beautiful gardens.
  • College Societies and Sports – provide an outlet and relaxation in a high- pressure environment, as well as bringing other members of the community into College.

Your gift to the Annual Fund will help the College to continue to offer a first-class education to students from all walks of life, with all the opportunities that it brings.

The Student Wellbeing Fund. Robinson has always endeavoured to be a place where its students can thrive. There has always been a network of academics and staff that students can call on when help and advice is needed. Recent years however have had an impact on the students and the need for support has increased.

The anxiety and isolation associated with the pandemic, and the economic pressures facing many families, mean that our sharp focus on this subject and expenditure on pastoral care must continue and grow. We must invest in our student’ ability to make the most of their time with us. Funds raised for the Wellbeing Appeal will strengthen our ability to do just that.

Recent years have seen an increase in the requirement for additional support and we now must not only respond to the needs of our students, but should aim to be one of the most forward-looking and imaginative of the Cambridge Colleges in our approach to welfare and wellbeing.

We can meet this need by expanding our Welfare and Wellbeing Team and by creating a post to manage and co-ordinate the work of this team. A post we hope to recruit as soon as possible. A safe and confidential space for students to meet with this team is also a priority and work will soon begin to create a Wellbeing Centre in Thorneycreek House.

As well as being able to provide the right critical support at the right time, the newly created team will be better-placed to provide guidance on measures such as improved nutrition, exercise and sleep to help prevent an issue becoming a crisis.

Can anyone give to ‘Binson Gives’?

Yes! We want to encourage donations from as many people as possible.

What is matched funding?

Some of our generous Members have offered funding to help incentivise others to give if certain challenges are met during Binson Gives. This means in some cases your donation can be worth double to the College. With the addition of Gift Aid a donation of £100 could be worth up to £250 to the College if matched pound for pound.

First time donors and the Harding Challenge

If you are a first-time donor and choose to donate to any aspect of student support eg the Wellbeing Fund ,your gift will unlock, pound for pound, a contribution to a special university wide fund for undergraduate financial support from the University Harding Challenge.

Your donation will go entirely to benefit students at Robinson in the area that you’d like to support. However, the additional money unlocked from the Harding Challenge will be highly beneficial to students across the University as part of expansions to the Cambridge Bursary Scheme aimed at helping all undergraduates in greatest need across Collegiate Cambridge.
